Bulletproof your Hiring Process
In today’s labor market, where finding a quality employee is as tough as it has been in 25 years, it critical that you get it right when it comes to hiring. Your business needs committed staff that won’t fall apart on you or leave for another opportunity at the drop of a hat. You also don’t want to let problems through your door. You can certainly make the process more effective and create employee longevity with these 5 tips from our recruiters:
Know WHAT you are hiring for
The key to finding the right people is to know what you’re looking for in the first place. Of course, have a detailed job description, understand what skillset and experience you need, but first and foremost, know WHO you want in that position. What type of person fits your culture and will collaborate well with your team? Culture fit is half the battle, get it right and your chances of a successful hire are far greater.
Know WHO you are hiring
Its no secret it’s tough to find good people but rushing the process because you need someone fast ends up with bad results more than good results. Its critical to take the time necessary to do diligence on anyone you are considering hiring. Understand where they have been, why they left their last job, ask about gaps in their work history – what were they doing for those 4 months in late 2021? Check references!
Have a clear onboarding plan
After hearing from our many clients and our own staffing recruiters, employees these days are leaving jobs they were just hired for because “it just wasn’t the right fit” or “I didn’t like what I was doing” or “I didn’t like the other employees.” These are usually cop-outs, but you can lessen the chance of “ghosting” by having a clear plan for onboarding, training, and assimilation into your workplace. Take the time out to give the new hire every chance to be successful and every reason to stay. Make sure you train them in your culture, policies and work expectations.
Create an accurate job description
In this age of “entitlement” there is a small (but noticeable) percentage of employees who are looking for the easy way out. We’ve heard of stories of employees complaining that a particular task was “not part of their job description” and then causing a big stink about it with management. You can lessen the chance of any misinterpretations but having an accurate job description and communicating it clearly.
Don’t allow problems to start or to fester
There are unfortunately employees in the workforce that simply want to cause trouble wherever they go. Again, that’s why it’s important to check references, but problems can still arise quickly. Be very studious about engagement with employees that begin to show signs of stress or distress, and quench the problem through coaching and disciplinary action before the problem becomes toxic can affect other employees.
Finally, don’t be afraid to take quick action with employees that are not working out or not performing to company standards. It likely won’t get better if you have already attempted to coach them. Don’t waste more time and money than you need, take the appropriate action before a big problem arises.
